Tiny Homes and Micro Cabins

There is a new way of thinking starting to emerge in the house building community. People are moving away from large houses and hefty mortgages in exchange for small manageable homes and financial freedom.

How much do we really need to be comfortable?

This is the big question. When taking out a mortgage every extra square meter of floor area you build adds to your monthly repayments.

Tiny homes or micro cabins as they are known come in all sorts of sizes and styles each one uniquely crafted to suit the owner. They are cheap to build, easy to heat therefore require a lot less energy making them a sustainable option with a lower carbon foot print.

Lloyd Kahns Book tiny homes is a compilation of great photographs show casing the diversity of  tiny homes being built. Check it out at http://www.shelterpub.com/_tiny_homes/tiny_homes_book.html for inspiration.

3 years ago my wife and I decided to build a small house within our means. We ended up with a 45sqm cottage using recycled and reclaimed materials where we have lived comfortably since. It is a cute wee cabin which is pleasure to live in, cheap to heat, easy to clean and has given us the financial freedom to come on our tour of America.

It was in America during our tour of sustainable homes we meet Marcus Lucas a German expat, Actor and part-time Carpenter who lives in the delightful Boulder Caravan park. He bought his tiny home for $60,000 spent $3000 renovating and refitting it. And now lives mortgage free in the heart of one of Colorado’s most expensive neighborhoods.

If you’d like to build a Micro cabin give us a call or email us here at Erkhart Construction to discuss your options.
